It’s true that students who are into natural sciences are constantly inquisitive about astronomical objects like stars, planets, galaxies and so on. In fact, those students are the ones who constantly ask questions in their science tuition, related to natural sciences. Thus, understanding the fact, we are here to explore few facts on the Milky Way Galaxy. Yes! the galaxy that contains our solar system. In 1610, the renowned Italian polymath, astronomer, philosopher, engineer, mathematician and physicist, Galileo Galilei first resolved the band of light into individual stars with his telescope. To explore more about this galaxy, here are the 10 interesting facts about the Milky Way Galaxy. 1. The Milky Way is a barred spiral galaxy with a diameter between 100,000 light-years and 180,000 light-years. The shape and scope of the Milky Way Galaxy were discovered by Edwin Hubble (1889 - 1953). 2. Scientists believe that the Milky Way galaxy is estimated to contain 100–400 billion stars. Whilst the stars we see on Earth are about 2,500. 3. The Milky Way has two major and minor arms along with two smaller spurs. Our sun and the solar system are in the spur called Orion Arm which is located between two major arms called Perseus and Sagittarius. 4. As the Milky Way is continually revolving, the sun and the solar system travel with it. Precisely, the solar system travels at an average speed of almost 828,000 kilometers per hour. 5. The span of time (Known as the galactic year or grandiose year) for the Solar System to go around the Milky Way Galaxy is evaluated approximately 225 to 250 million terrestrial years. 6. As we mentioned above, the Milky Way has two major and minor arms, in within its arms new stars are constantly formed. Stars and gasses in Galactic Center rotate roughly 220 kilometers per second. 7. The spiral arms of cosmic system contain a high measure of dust and gas. Always remember that dust, gas, and stars are the most visible ingredients in the galaxy. 8. Talking about the facts, it’s impossible to miss out the dark particles like black holes. The scientist believes that a black hole is a place in space where gravity pulls so strong that even light cannot get out. They also believe that dying stars creates stellar black holes and the nearest black hole is likely 1,600 light-years away. 9. Scientists believe that the oldest star in our galaxy was formed just after the Big Bang and it is roughly 13.82 billion years old. 10. The largest black holes types are called supermassive black hole (SMBH) and it encloses masses of more than 1 million suns together. The largest black hole of Milky Way is called Sagittarius A* and it lies in the heart of the galaxy.
